Time and Money

Lack of time is one of the biggest challenges of any SME business but would you like to know the solution?

“Definite with the infinite”

Be specific, be definite about exactly what you want, otherwise it doesn’t come to life in your mind so you can believe in it (because it seems real)!

So assuming having 50% to 100% of your time is definitely achievable and you’re committed what next?

You need to begin with leveraging.

Leverage means doing work once that you profit from for years. The challenge is, you never benefit from leveraged work while you are doing it; there is always a delayed gratification. This is why is extremely hard for a business owner to do leveraged work activities. This includes learning anything more proactively about team building, selling, advertising, website optimising, measuring, understanding financials, spreadsheets etc etc – i.e. all the things that will lead to making you LOTS of money AND freeing up all your time.

Until you are doing leveraged work you aren’t making progress in business, you are virtually swimming with lead shoes ‘hoping’ you don’t drown, but there’s no land in sight. Sooner or later you get tired and stop swimming completely, slowly drowning (as you get older and more tired from the sheer effort of trying to keep your business going).

There are many forms of leverage in business depending on and how you can invest your time.

Most business owners are just spending their time; they aren’t investing it. They continually say, “I don’t have time, I’m too busy”, yet do nothing to free up their time in the future.

Here’s exactly what you need to do. We’ll start with low level leverage activities you can do and then add on higher leverage things.

Low level leverage

  1. Use 1-2 hours a week to train your staff proactively.
  2. Think about permanent solutions to your challenges, not temporary ones. If you can’t get customers, learn how to write better promotions, don’t keep writing your own if you haven’t learned how to, delegate it.
  3. Delegate, train and delegate some more. The more you delegate the more time you will free up.
  4. Learn! Learning is uncommon with business owners. This means not technical learning but sales, marketing, leadership, personality profiling, financial intelligence, gross and net profit margins, systems, etc. Attend workshops and pay to learn these subjects as you only pay for learning once to benefit forever.

Higher level leverage

  1. Put your prices up by 10%. This works 95% of the time with no detriment in profit. Sure you might lose a small number of clients but the profit increase will offset the loss of sales from a few customers not buying.
  2. Use the extra profit to employ more staff to free up your time.
  3. Write systems so you are carrying out work once and benefitting forever. Training an employee, who then leaves one day means you need to train someone else again.
  4. Empower your staff more to do what you think they can’t do now. If you pay them to carry out a job, it’s their challenge to figure out how to do it, not yours.
